Sam Hwang, MD, PhD

Dr. Sam Hwang was awarded the Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin (AHW) Excellence Award for Collaboration in May of 2014. His project was featured in a formal ceremony at the AHW Endowment’s Ten Year Anniversary event, Looking Back, Moving Forward in May at the Sheraton Milwaukee Hotel in Brookfield. A video highlighting the work of Dr. Hwang’s project was shown during the ceremony.

Dr. Hwang’s project focused on the class of molecules called Chemokines, proteins that influence the movement of cells, including cancer cells spreading throughout the body. Collaborating with Drs. Michael Dwinell (MCW Biochemistry) and Brian Volkman (MCW Microbiology and Molecular Genetics), they found that chemokines play a role in how cancer cells metastasize. He tested custom-built molecules designed to reduce the chemokine activity involved in cancer cell movement. This collaboration will hopefully help prevent or delay the spread of cancer so it may be more effectively treated.
