Olayemi Sokumbi, MD
Dr. Olayemi (Yemi) Sokumbi is a new addition to the department of dermatology at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She is an Assistant Professor of Dermatology and Director of Dermatopathology. She graduated summa cum laude from St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minnesota with a degree in biomedical sciences. She then proceeded to earn her medical degree from the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine where she excelled amongst a small class of colleagues. She completed both her preliminary year in internal medicine and her residency in dermatology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota where she served as chief resident in her final year.
During her residency at the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Sokumbi received numerous awards including the Roy S. Rogers award for excellence in patient care, the Paul A. O’Leary award in recognition of clinical excellence and the Richard K. Winkelmann award for excellence in dermatologic research. Following residency, she completed a fellowship in dermatopathology at University of Texas Southwestern medical center in Dallas, Texas under the guidance of world-renowned dermatopathologist, Dr. Clay Cockerell.
Dr. Sokumbi wears two hats when caring for patients: one as a dermatologist who sees patients in the clinic, and the other as a pathologist who interprets skin biopsy specimens. With her unique perspective as a dermatologist and dermatopathologist, she utilizes clinical-pathologic correlation to optimize diagnostic accuracy when caring for patients. Her clinical and research interests include clinical-pathologic correlation of inflammatory skin disorders, quality improvement in dermatopathology, dermatopathology resident education, diagnosis and management of dysplastic nevi and cutaneous lymphoproliferative disorders.
Dr. Sokumbi has authored multiple abstracts and peer reviewed journal articles, including articles published in Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Journal of Dermatopathology, the Journal of Cutaneous Pathology and JAMA Dermatology. She has had the platform to present her research at national and international meetings. She is actively involved in professional societies related to her clinical interests.
